I
am intrigued by the beauty and mathematical order of plant life.
Individual flora and their part in an essential, symbiotic living
environment are the inspiration for my work. The subjects of my
paintings are flora, removed from their natural context of
coexistence.
I paint subjects removed from
their natural environments in fields of space and color. Larger than
actual size, they become surreal singular entities. They interact
within the space and at times with other elements depending on their
placement and size. Some float or seem to move within the space,
others possess weight and gravity.
A unique quality can be identified in
the removal of a life form from its natural environment. I strive to
capture the essence, which makes a thing what it is. A flesh-like
quality to a flower or the subtle movement of leaves can describe a
thing simply and accurately. I paint single subjects, larger than
life, to define their uniqueness.
Their singularity has a quality of
portraiture. I render each subject dimensionally to show its living
sensual quality, as in a portrait, to define the character of a
subject. The distinct bend of a leaf or the swell of a seed pod are
distinctive characteristics, as in traditional human portraiture,
the line of a mouth can determine that person's characteristic
temperament. Portraits memorialize the subject. The subjects of my
paintings may even live beyond the time of my painting them.
